A Coaching Dilemma: How to discover what your client really need coaching
At the ICA coaches, we have recently had our first tele-class, "The 3 Coaching reasons NOT Work, and what we can do." One of the things we do is that the explanation a person to know why they came to training often obscures what they really need to work. The cause of this is at the heart one of the main reasons why coaching does not always all it can.
strength-based coaching is designed to help people achieve their goals by helping to develop and apply their strengths. The problem lies in the fact that people are often confused about what their strengths really are, and coaches are not a quick and reliable way to evaluate these forces. Without a reliable assessment that focuses on measuring a person's natural strengths, coaches are forced to rely on their own informal assessment of skills and self-report of their customers. Too often, this approach misses the mark.
Customers have difficulty in presenting a clear description and precisely what they came for the training is based in years of good intentions, but the performance feedback confusion they have received throughout their lives. As a society, we have accepted the value we want to produce "well balanced" citizens who are capable in many areas. Although it sounds good, the production approach of "well balanced" citizens creates a "grow your gaps "mentality that undermines the discovery and development of our natural assets.
From early pediatric standards development, continues with report cards, and culminating in performance reviews at work, the majority of comments we receive is what we do not do well or if we fall short and what we can do to improve.
After years of return on their gaps, most people feel a little inadequate in their skills. The majority of their energy is focused on maintaining a functional level with skills they have acquired to fill gaps that have been repeatedly pointed out to them. The acquisition, development and maintenance of these skills have a high price of energy and time. People still get results on average, despite the enormous cost, and they come to training with questions that reflect this attempt to succeed in life by using skills acquired rather than seeking to discover their innate nature.
When customers submit their questions in this perspective, they hope to find the magic the scene that will acquire the skills easy. They know that something is wrong and to focus the blame on their inability to use their skills to create meaningful success. The magic, however, lies in helping them understand, recognize, claim, and begin to use their natural skills more regularly.
As coaches, we have a responsibility to help customers to discover what they naturally do well and give them the choice to let go of old approaches to the challenges of life. While we accept the assessment our customers that their life is not what they want it, we need to question their assessment of why and offer alternatives that meet their main forces innate.
